Judge Christian is the fifth child of William Grundy, a Navy officer and Phyllis Dobbins, a factory worker. Her parents worked extremely hard to raise and educate their six children. Lori’s family lived in Newport, Rhode Island until she was 15 years old. In 1976 Lori’s family moved to Jacksonville, Florida where Judge Christian attended Terry Parker High School. She participated in track and field, the National Honors Society and several other extracurricular activities. Upon graduating from high school, Judge Christian left Jacksonville to attend Georgia Institute of Technical (Georgia Tech). While at Georgia Tech, Judge Christian worked as a co-op student to pay for her college education. She paid for her tuition and expenses by alternating working for the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) one quarter and taking classes the next quarter. In 1984, she graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Engineering.

Upon graduation, Judge Christian accepted a position as an International Buyer at Westinghouse where she had the opportunity to travel to Korea, Brazil, and Austria.  As a buyer for Westinghouse, Judge Christian lived in California, Pennsylvania, Missouri and New Jersey. While working at Westinghouse, fate brought Judge Christian and Wayne Christian together.  They met each other while tutoring minority students in an acceleration program to encourage minority youth to enter engineering and scientific fields. After several years of dating, Judge Christian and Wayne married each other in 1989.

In 1989, Judge Christian was asked by Westinghouse to become the Materials Manager of a proposed new plant in Clinton, North Carolina. She worked tirelessly for two years to develop Schindler Elevator Corporation (formerly Westinghouse Elevator Corp.) from the ground level. The plant vitalized the area and employed hundreds of local people from the surrounding areas of Sampson County. After the plant was completed, Judge Christian left Westinghouse to attend the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In her third year of law school, Judge Christian and Wayne welcomed their first child, Nia, into their family. Three years later, they adopted their second child, Justin.

After graduating from UNC Law School in 1994, Judge Christian clerked for the Honorable Justice Henry Frye of the North Carolina Supreme Court. She also worked as an associate with the law firm Wood & Francis in Raleigh, North Carolina. After her clerkship, Judge Christian practiced various areas of law. She was a guardian ad litem attorney, a parent coordinator in domestic court, and a drug treatment court attorney. With the assistance of many other integral persons, Judge Christian helped create Wake County’s first juvenile drug treatment court. In July 2001 Judge Christian accepted a part-time position with the Wake County Attorney’s office. In February, 2007 Governor Easley appointed Judge Christian to Wake County District Court. Since her tenure as a District Court Judge, Judge Christian has presided over domestic violence court, criminal court, and child support enforcement court.

In addition to her civic duty as a District Court Judge, Judge Christian has served the Wake County community through her various volunteer activities. For over 18 years, Judge Christian and her family have become entrenched in the Wake County community. She was the Executive Board Secretary of the Urban League, the former President of Sterling Montessori Charter and Academy School Board of Directors, and a mentor in the Daniels Middle School Mentor Program.

When Judge Christian is not on the bench or volunteering in the community, she values every second she spends with her family. Judge Christian considers her family her highest priority. She relishes in watching her daughter play soccer and the piano, enjoys watching her son play baseball and basketball on his All Star teams, and enjoys spending time with her husband.
